Although the first plenary session after the winter break is scheduled for 20 January, the liberal faction will meet earlier on 6 January, to decide who will take up the post.
Following Etgen’s departure, the DP remains represented in the Chamber’s Bureau by Lydie Polfer and André Bauler, while Corinne Cahen serves as a substitute member.
Membership in the Bureau is a prerequisite for becoming vice president. However, while the DP currently has two full Bureau members, all of the other 12 DP MPs are also eligible to put themselves forward for the role.
DP faction leader Gilles Baum underlines that the position entails many responsibilities: “Beyond the many responsibilities of the Chamber president, the role is also highly representative within the country. For instance, they often visit high schools, and when they are unavailable, the vice presidents step in to represent the Chamber. Thus, the position involves not only presiding over plenary sessions and representing Luxembourg abroad but also fulfilling numerous representative duties within the country.”
Baum declined to reveal which of the 14 liberal MPs have already expressed interest in the role, but he emphasised that he will not be available for the position.
