This Monday, more farmer’s protests in the Belgian province of Luxembourg have been announced. This will impact Luxembourg as well specifically the E411 motorway connecting Brussels and Luxembourg.
A blockade has been announced from 6am onwards on the Weyler interchange near Arlon, which will cause heavy traffic and road disturbances in the direction of Luxembourg. The blockade will last until 8pm.
Already throughout the course of Sunday, a procession of over 400 tractors made its way through Belgian motorways, mainly in Wallonia.
In anticipation of the protests, the E42 near Namur as well as roads leading to Brussels were closed down on Sunday.
The Young Farmers’ Federation (FJA) is well aware that these blockades and protests will cause significant frustrations for car drivers. However, the FJA insisted that these protests are in people’s best interests as a threat to agriculture is a threat to everyone’s livelihood.
In a statement on Monday morning, Luxembourg’s farmers’ trade union “Centrale Paysanne,” declared that they stand in solidarity with neighbouring farmers.
The statement further reads that farmers, winegrowers, and gardeners in Germany, Belgium, and France are struggling with numerous constraints and unrealistic regulations imposed by the European Commission, coupled with hostile agricultural decisions from their respective governments.
No other economic sector has has its livelihood threatened as brutally as the agricultural sector. The protesters’ actions are a natural consequence of the challenges they are having to face.
However, it is emphasised that the situation in Luxembourg is not as dramatic as in neighbouring countries. Since the new government took office, communication with the Ministry of Agriculture has improved, and the concerns of the sector are taken seriously.
