Amid stock shortages of firewood and other heating supplies, the ECC has observed an increase in the number of fraudulent websites and scams offering too-good-to-be-true prices, with customers duped into parting with their money for deliveries that never materialise.
In this context, the ECC has issued a number of tips to help consumers avoid falling into scammers’ traps. Customers are advised to practise vigilance and should check a number of factors when ordering online, such as the website’s legal notice and general terms and conditions.
They should also double-check information such as the business phone number and address, as well as consulting online reviews prior to placing an order.
Finally, customers should check the payment service is secure (usually displaying a closed padlock symbol and “https” address). Fraudulent websites frequently ask customers to pay via bank transfer or other non-secure methods of payment. Further information can be found in the attached press release.
