RTL Today
Luxembourg's cultural landscape is still grappling with the lingering effects of the Covid-19 pandemic: Museums, cinemas, and performance venues are experiencing lower visitor numbers compared to before Covid, Statec says.

Data by the national statistics agency reveals that music venues and theatres are operating at 94% capacity compared to 2019, while museums and castles are at 91%, and cinemas are lagging behind at 67%.

Despite these hurdles, 2022 saw approximately 803,000 individuals attending cinemas, 979,000 participating in theatre, music, or dance events, and 981,000 guests exploring museums.

When the pandemic hit, attendance fell by 67% on average across all cultural institutions.

Institutions spread around country

The central and southern regions emerge as the most popular among music venue and theatregoers, constituting a combined 93%. In contrast, the northern and eastern regions lead in museums and castles, making up 45%, followed by the central (42%) and southern (13%) regions.

Employment at these institutions remained fairly stable between 2019 and 2022, with a total of 630 people. Interestingly, employment in museums and castles even increased slightly during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Men hold 56% of the positions in 2022.

Luxembourg currently has 53 museums and five castles with at least one permanent exhibition, as well as 15 cinemas and 27 performance stages.
