Luxembourg’s annual “Vëlosummer” cycling campaign launched on 19 July, featuring 14 routes spanning over 500km across the Grand Duchy. The opening weekend saw strong participation as cyclists completed the first circuit from Mersch through Schoenfels and Kopstal to Mamer.
This year’s event coincided with Mersch’s traditional “Alles op de Vëlo” day, now in its 28th edition. Mayor Michel Malherbe noted the collaboration began through the Ecological Movement’s partnership with Mamer, Kopstal, and Mersch municipalities, now regularly attracting 5,000–6,000 participants including families.
As the Vëlosummer was launched at the same time, the organisers decided to combine the two events in order to attract as many people as possible – which proved successful.
Minister of Culture and Minister Delegate for Tourism Eric Thill praised the initiative’s popularity, highlighting effective cooperation with local authorities.
This year introduces route-based quizzes alongside the returning yellow jersey incentive for cyclists completing all circuits.
The event offers 14 varied routes nationwide, with shortened alternatives available for recreational cyclists. Participants without bicycles can rent them through advance booking systems.
