The US Embassy of Luxembourg invites members of the public to its annual Memorial Day ceremony, taking place in Hamm on 23 May. The ceremony will start at 1.45pm at the Luxembourg American Military Cemetery and Memorial and will be attended by US Ambassador Stacey Feinberg, alongside government and military representatives from both the United States and Luxembourg.
Memorial Day commemorates the service members who died while fighting for the US Armed Forces. Originally known as Decoration Day, which honoured those killed in the US Civil War, the world wars later led to the holiday evolving into Memorial Day to honour all members of the US military who died in service.
While the American public holiday is traditionally observed on the last Monday of May in the United States (25 May this year), its Luxembourgish ceremonies take place the preceding Saturday.
