
“The weather situation indicates a potential flood risk,” Meteolux wrote on Thursday, warning residents to exercise vigilance and to check the water management administration’s flooding website for further details.
Areas along the Moselle river have already experienced issues, with flooding in Schengen causing road closures on Rue Robert Goebbels/CR152b between the Schengen Bridge and the French border. At 7am on Thursday morning it was reported these roads were to be closed to traffic until further notice.
“The heavy and continuous rainfall over the past few days in the Vosges reservoirs have triggered a sharp increase in water levels in the Moselle’s upper basin,” the state water services said in their latest flood report.
In France, the Vosges department was placed on orange alert for flooding on Tuesday, with the warning maintained on Wednesday as a yellow alert.
Although the flood risk is primarily exacerbated by the Moselle’s water levels, Meteolux has placed the entire southern half of the country on yellow alert for flooding until midnight on Friday, with more rainfall forecast over the next two days. The entire northern half of the country is on yellow alert for possible risk of flooding until Friday at noon.
The weather forecaster warned the situation could change quickly, with rain showers predicted towards midday on Thursday, which could include “episodes of heavy rain”. Further intermittent rainfall is forecast overnight and on Friday morning. Fortunately, conditions are expected to improve later on Friday.
