The ceremony featured a flyover by the 37th Airlift Squadron of the 86th Airlift Wing based at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, as well as speeches from several Luxembourgish and American officials.
Among those addressing attendees were US Ambassador to Luxembourg Stacey Feinberg, Chamber of Deputies President Claude Wiseler, Minister Serge Wilmes, and Lieutenant General William Taylor, United States Military Representative to NATO.
In her remarks, Ambassador Feinberg said she was grateful to commemorate Memorial Day in Luxembourg, highlighting the country’s efforts to preserve the memory of American soldiers who helped liberate Europe during both World Wars. She also noted that a Luxembourg student joined the official delegation this year, expressing hope that involving younger generations in remembrance ceremonies would become a lasting tradition.
During the event, the student recited The Young Dead Soldiers Do Not Speak, by Archibald MacLeish.
The official delegation later took part in a wreath-laying ceremony honouring, among others, His Royal Highness the Grand Duke, the United States, the Luxembourg government, the City of Luxembourg, members of the US Armed Forces, and the American Battle Monuments Commission.
The ceremony concluded with a gun salute by the US Air Force’s 86th Airlift Wing, the playing of Taps, performances of the Luxembourgish and American national anthems by military bands, and a closing benediction delivered by Chaplain Captain Jamie Osborne.
