Minister of the Interior Taina Bofferding presented two draft laws on Wednesday which will see four municipalities merge to make two new communes, bringing Luxembourg’s total number of municipalities to 100.

Grousbous and Wahl will combine to make a new municipal council and will receive government funding worth 5 million euros. Bous and Waldbredimus will receive around 6.7 million in government aid as part of the merger, according to the Chamber website. The council size for the two new municipalities will be set at 12 and 11 councillors respectively.

The four municipalities will still participate in the elections on 15 June, using the majority system.

Both new municipalities will still have fewer than 3,000 inhabitants after the merger. Whether the new councils will make use of the majority or the proportional system in the 2029 elections will depend on the development of the population over the coming years.

During the presentation, Minister Bofferding said she was always in favour of municipal mergers to improve efficiency, particularly when the fusion applies to smaller communes.
