Volunteers and professional firefighters from all over the world will travel to the Grand Duchy to participate in the World Rescue Challenge at the beginning of September. Twelve people from Luxembourg qualified for the competition, which is why they regularly need to train different emergency scenarios in order to prepare.

An accident involving three cars on a country road with one passenger stuck and afraid inside one of the vehicles is one such training simulation.

Sam Schaal, member of the TRT LX team, provided insight into the different aspects of the competition: “It will last five days and test every team across three different scenarios. One is described as ‘standard’, the other ‘rapid’, and the final one ‘complex’. Three to four judges are present to evaluate us. Whoever gets most combined points from the technical and safety assessment wins.”

300 firefighters from 50 different teams are expected to participate in the world cup. Two Luxembourgish teams will also compete, both of which are volunteer brigades. A team includes six people: a team leader, a medic, and four members. In 2019, Team TRT came eleventh in the World Rescue Challenge.

Marc Horper, who is new in the firefighting brigade, explained how their team is set up: “We have three experienced people who show us young people how it is done. This was particularly useful at the beginning, but we have since become a well-rehearsed unit.”

The goal of the World Rescue Challenge will remain clear: gaining as much experience as only possible for the safety of future accident victims.
