A total of 4,308 people died in the Grand Duchy last year, with most deaths linked to disease and more than half occurring in hospital.

4,308 deaths recorded in 2024

In 2024, the Grand Duchy recorded 4,308 deaths, which is 50 more than in the previous year, according to data from the Register of Causes of Death maintained by the Health Directorate. Of those who died, 2,186 were men and 2,122 women. The average age at death was 75 for men and 81 for women.

Majority of deaths disease-related

The vast majority of deaths (94.2%) were attributed to disease, while external causes accounted for 5.8% of the total. Most deaths occurred in hospital (52.4%), followed by retirement homes (28.6%) and private residences (16.7%).

Cancer remains deadliest cause

Tumours remained the leading cause of death in Luxembourg last year, accounting for 28.4% of cases, a total of 1,224 deaths (664 men and 560 women). Lung cancer was the most fatal among men, with 122 deaths, followed by prostate cancer (65) and pancreatic cancer (51). Among women, breast cancer remained the leading cause with 107 deaths, ahead of lung cancer (95) and pancreatic cancer (46).

Other causes of death

Diseases of the circulatory system were the second most common cause, resulting in 1,006 deaths (23.3%). These were followed by respiratory diseases (8.7%), mental and behavioural disorders (7.9%), external causes (5.8%) and nervous system diseases (5.6%).
