Thousands of pilgrims gathered in Echternach on Whit Tuesday for the annual hopping procession, a UNESCO-recognised tradition in honour of St Willibrord.

Echternach's hopping procession is taking place on Tuesday. Every year on Whit Tuesday, the traditional procession is held in honour of St Willibrord.

As in previous years, the streets of Echternach are crowded on Whit Tuesday. Thousands of pilgrims are making their way through Luxembourg's oldest town in honour of St Willibrord.

Hopping from one foot to the other, the pilgrims slowly progress towards the basilica as part of a tradition that is inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The opening mass of the 2026 hopping procession was held, as usual, at 8pm on Whit Monday. This year, it was celebrated by the Bishop of Münster, Dr Heiner Wilmer.

On Whit Tuesday, the first pilgrims arrived in Echternach as early as 5.15am. At 9.15am, Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich delivered a speech to mark the opening of the hopping procession. The final pilgrim groups reached the basilica at around 1pm.
