In an interview with RTL on Thursday morning, Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) MP Ricardo Marques addressed several current political issues. Ten years after Luxembourg’s last referendum, the 31-year-old psychologist from Echternach believes it is time to reconsider voting rights.
Back in 2015, a clear 80 percent majority voted against non-citizen suffrage. “At the time, I would have voted ‘yes,’ especially considering that 50 percent of residents end up deciding for the other 50 percent. I think we should dare to open up the question to everyone, given that our society is constantly evolving... a referendum would be great tool to do so,” says Marques.
The CSV politician has Portuguese roots, and does not deny that there were obstacles along the way. Nonetheless, he always held his head high. He now focuses on issues such as health, social security, family, and housing, on which he comments that his agenda gives a pretty clear indication as to whether he belongs ‘more to the liberal or social side of the party’.
Regarding the disputes between Minister of Labour Georges Mischo (CSV) and the unions, he confirms that the situation is tense, but that dialogue persists nevertheless. “I am pleased that the unions will be received by the Minister next week. The Minister should appreciate the importance of social dialogue, which is the only way to reach collective agreements.”
The politician also discussed tensions, adding that his colleague Martine Deprez, Minister for Social Security, made a ‘courageous decision’. When asked whether pension talks should solely touch upon the private sector, or also the civil service, the MP replies that discussions need to be held in a comprehensive and united way. “It is important to have young people around the table and explain what is at stake.”
