In a first for Luxembourg, on Saturday, Archie Williams walked back and forth between two skyscrapers on Place de l'Europe on a slackline, 68 metres above the heads of night marathon runners below.

On Saturday, Archie Williams covered a total of 4.2 kilometres across multiple crossings between Tour A and Tour B on Place de l'Europe, with the Luxembourg night marathon taking place on the ground far below. With Williams being the first person to ever complete such a feat in Luxemnbourg, the achievement carried an added layer of meaning: despite his English parents, he himself was born in Luxembourg, making this something of a homecoming.

Archie Williams first took up slacklining in Manchester during the Covid lockdowns, when outdoor sports offered one of the few opportunities to spend time with friends. What began as a pandemic pastime has since become a professional career, with Williams now counted among the world's top highline athletes, including a competition victory in China last year.

He was joined by three fellow slackliners, two of whom were responsible for his safety while the third captured the performance on drone camera. Williams and one of his colleagues currently live together in Greece, and an external team also assisted with the technical setup.

Nerves, he says, were not the issue. His main worry in the days leading up to the event was that the weather might force a cancellation. For ten minutes on the day, that fear looked justified.

"Highline is a sport of freedom for me", he said.

Saturday's performance is just one stop on a busy international schedule. Williams is heading to Iceland next for a documentary shoot, and has his sights set on the Highline World Cup in Brazil, though he is still seeking sponsors to make that trip possible.
