The education ministry published new figures on the school dropout rate on Thursday, confirming 1,884 students left education in the 2023/2024 school year - the highest number since 2020/2021.
Luxembourg’s rate has thus risen to 8.2%, still remaining under the European average of 9.6%.
According to the report, boys and young men are more likely to leave school without any qualifications in the Grand Duchy. Students are most apt to drop out between the ages of 15 and 17, or in the 4e and 3e classes.
The majority of dropouts were said to have struggled academically, putting them around 2 years behind their peers. In addition, young people continued to drop out of apprenticeships and professional training, citing difficulties in finding employers for internships.
