The Nordstad merger project remains on the table. After Erpeldange failed to reach a clear decision earlier this week, Schieren gave the process a strong push forward on Wednesday evening: all eight members of its municipal council voted unanimously in favour of continuing discussions with neighbouring Diekirch, Ettelbruck, and Erpeldange.
Diekirch had already shown its support with a unanimous vote on Monday. Ettelbruck is scheduled to take a position next Monday.
In Erpeldange, however, the outcome was inconclusive. The council was evenly split: four members supported resuming the merger talks, four opposed, and one abstained. The deadlock is largely linked to concerns over a planned wind turbine project by Nordenergie – a joint venture between Enovos and the municipalities of Ettelbruck and Diekirch. The turbine is to be built on Ettelbruck territory, near Burden, a locality belonging to Erpeldange.
The Erpeldange council is expected to meet again behind closed doors this week, and a second vote could follow during the summer break. If the result is once again a tie, the deciding vote would fall to Mayor Claude Gleis, who notably voted in favour of continuing merger discussions in Monday’s session.
