The threat level has been lifted after an armed attacker alarm was triggered at the secondary school in Redange/Attert on Tuesday morning, prompting a significant police response at the scene.

According to initial reports, an alarm indicating an armed attacker was activated at the school at 8.45am.

In an interview with RTL, headteacher Jeff Kohnen said a student reported sightings of a suspicious young person at the school, saying they were possibly armed. The school immediately informed the police and triggered the appropriate procedures, ensuring students were taken to safety.

Police were unable to locate a weapon on school premises.

The police have since confirmed that a major force was deployed to the scene. As a precaution, students and teachers were instructed to remain in their classrooms with doors locked and to maintain silence. Officers spoke to some pupils to check up on them, but classes were told to re-lock their doors afterwards.

Parents going to the school to check up on their children were not allowed on site for the duration of the operation. They were kept informed of the situation throughout, however.

Cause for the alarm was a “suspicious person” on site, according to an official police statement. Police dogs were also sent to the school to support search efforts. A safety perimeter was installed around the school building, but authorities confirmed at 10.50am that no threat was detected and that the alarm has been lifted again.

The Ministry of Education later highlighted the importance of supporting pupils and staff following the incident, as the CGDIS psychological support group attended the school on Tuesday afternoon to discuss what had happened and to give recommendations.

Counsellors will also be present at the school on Wednesday, while members of CePAS, the psycho-social support centre for education, will be at pupils’ disposal should the need arise over the coming days.
