On Saturday morning between 8am and 1pm, the authorities carried out a large-scale traffic check in Mamer, working alongside colleagues from Belgium and France.

The operation, which coincides with the start of the busy holiday season, resulted in 40 vehicle inspections, with 15 drivers fined on the spot.

Several vehicles were flagged for being overloaded, which led the police to issue a warning to motorists not to overload their cars. After all, overloading vehicles is not only dangerous because it affects braking and stability, but it can also lead to vehicles being stopped abroad.

Drink driving and drugs

In parallel to the organised checks, the police recorded several other traffic infractions over the weekend.

On Sunday morning, police in Niederkorn received a report of a man leaving a petrol station while visibly intoxicated.

Officers managed to locate the driver shortly afterwards in Pétange, where he failed his breathalyser test and was issued a provisional driving ban.

The man had also attempted to mislead officers by providing a false identity, and further checks revealed he was already banned from driving. The man was arrested by order of the public prosecutor and brought before the investigating judge on Sunday.

Later that day, at around 11.30am in Esch-sur-Alzette, police officers were called to rue d’Audun following a car collision with a tree. However, the driver was nowhere to be found, having fled the scene, but was soon apprehended.

Here, too, the breathalyser came back positive, and suspicious behaviour suggested he might have ingested drugs, though a body scan later came back negative. A fine was handed out.

Another incident occurred in Esch-sur-Alzette on Sunday afternoon, when a suspicious vehicle was spotted on rue de Barbourg. As soon as officers approached the vehicle and its three occupants, they detected a strong smell of cannabis. A search revealed drugs, weapons, including a folding knife, cash, and a mobile phone.

The driver, who already had a driving ban, was fined by order of the public prosecutor’s office, while the car and all illegal items were seized.
