Amid public backlash, Iranian artist Alborz Teymoorzadeh has openly criticised Luxembourg's decision to deny his visa extension, addressing his concerns in an open letter to Prime Minister Luc Frieden.

The Ministry of Home Affairs’ recent decision not to extend the visa of Iranian artist Alborz Teymoorzadeh, forcing him to leave Luxembourg, triggered significant public backlash.

Teymoorzadeh has now addressed an open letter to Prime Minister Luc Frieden, expressing his disappointment with the handling of his case. In the letter, he stated that “to date, there has been no appropriate, logical, or diplomatic response” regarding his visa extension request. Teymoorzadeh explained that he had submitted the necessary documents to change his visa status to self-employed, as he felt “at home” and “already part of the artistic scene and society” in Luxembourg.

The artist emphasised that his desire to stay in Luxembourg was not driven by necessity, adding that he did not require “your financial support, your residence permit, or your nationality.” Instead, he wished to remain in the country because he saw “the potential in this vibrant nation, with its rich and diverse cultural demographic.”

Despite his forced departure, Teymoorzadeh made it clear that he plans to continue collaborating with Luxembourg-based artists and cultural institutions, stating, “I am and I will be part of this society despite my geographical location.” He also noted that regardless of where he might obtain citizenship in the future, he will always be recognised as an “Iranian visual artist.” Teymoorzadeh suggested that while he may be known for his art, Prime Minister Frieden could be remembered for his “lack of contribution to Luxembourg’s cultural growth.”

Throughout his open letter, Teymoorzadeh underscored that his letter is not about his personal case but mainly about broader principles concerning the importance of art and culture.
