In a recent initiative, the police focused their efforts on combating "distracted driving," resulting in a significant number of penalties.

From 19 June to 29 June 2023, the police conducted a series of targeted checks aimed at raising awareness among motorists and reducing road accidents caused by distracted driving.

A total of 311 fines, amounting to €145 and a deduction of two points, were issued to drivers caught using their mobile phones behind the wheel.

Vehicle documents were also inspected, leading to the issuance of 209 fines.

Among the offences, 43 drivers failed to present a valid driving licence, while two were unable to provide their training booklet.

In addition, eleven drivers were unable to produce their registration certificate, 38 lacked valid insurance during the check, and 49 failed to present a tax sticker.

Another 80 drivers were unable to provide a valid vehicle inspection certificate.

Distracted driving

The police stress that distracted driving is a significant contributor to road accidents. Activities such as sending messages, using apps or social media, visually and audibly divert the driver’s attention, resulting in physical and cognitive distractions.

For this reason, the use of a mobile phone while operating a moving vehicle is regulated by Article 170bis of the Motorway Code. Failure to comply with these regulations can lead to a fine of €145 and a loss of two points on the driver’s record.

However, it’s not just mobile phone use that poses a risk. Lighting cigarettes, manipulating onboard instruments or navigation systems, and even conversations using hands-free kits can all contribute to driver distraction.

In an effort to address this issue, the police offer a comprehensive range of information and safety tips on their website.
