Unemployment in LuxembourgOver 18,000 jobseekers currently registered with ADEM

Although Luxembourg's unemployment rate has decreased from 5.7% to 5.5% from November, 2023 to December, 2023, a year ago the unemployment rate was at 4.8%.

According to a statement released by Luxembourg’s employment agency (ADEM) and Statec on Monday morning, the number of people looking for jobs has increased by 2.438 which is a 15.5% increase from the previous year. In total, the number of jobseekers registered with ADEM has reached 18.198 by December 31, 2023.
The most qualified job seekers (those with higher education degrees) and young people under 30 are being hit the hardest.

Impacted sectors

ADEM states that the most affected sectors are jobs in:

  • the construction industry,
  • communication, media, and multimedia,
  • the financial and real estate sector,
  • information technology,
  • accounting, and
  • business strategy.

The number of resident jobseekers benefitting from unemployment benefits has increased by 2,146 or 28% over the year, reaching 9,820 in December 31, 2023. The number of people receiving an employment measure stands at 4.086, a slight increase (1.9%) compared to December 2022.

Less job vacancies

During December 2023, employers declared 2.226 job vacancies to ADEM, corresponding to a decrease of 16.9% compared to December 2022.

The total number of available positions at the end of the month is 6,997 as of December 31,2023, which signifies a 36% compared to the year before.

This decrease impacts the following sectors the most:

  • business consulting,
  • information technology,
  • transportation and logistics,
  • construction, and
  • hospitality - catering, tourism, leisure, and entertainment.
