Norbert Haupert, the former athlete, sports administrator, and long-serving Christian Social People's Party (CSV) MP, has died at the age of 86.
As a young track and field athlete, Haupert specialised mainly in middle-distance running and competed at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, where Luxembourg was represented by 62 athletes.
He went on to be named Sportsman of the Year twice, in 1962 and 1963.
In later years, he served as President of the Athletics Federation from 1973 to 1979, and spent a decade with the Luxembourg Olympic and Sporting Committee (COSL), from 1989 to 1999.
In politics, Haupert represented the South constituency as a CSV MP for 14 years, from 1999 to 2013. A highlight of his parliamentary career came in 2008, when he served as rapporteur for the 2009 budget.
One of the most important milestones outside politics came in 2018, when he was appointed the first President of the newly established Kierchefong.
Alongside his role as an MP, Haupert was also elected to Mondercange municipal council for his party.
A native of Schifflange, he was known as a popular local politician in Mondercange, where he lived until his death, and was always ready to listen to residents’ concerns.
