This decision follows Bettel’s recent refusal to sign a contract with a coup leader in Burkina Faso.
“We always show solidarity when partners are present, but only if there is room for dialogue,” Bettel stated. “I don’t talk to a wall with no window to open. We don’t support a government led by coup plotters.”
Projects with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) remain unaffected by this decision.
Bettel emphasised that the decision is contingent upon the current situation and may be revisited should conditions stabilise.
“I also don’t want our personnel on the ground to have to walk around with six security guards and fear for their lives every day,” Bettel added.
