Starting on Sunday, 1 June, Luxembourg’s expanding local police initiative will deploy a new unit in the Moselle Valley, marking the latest phase of a national pilot project.

The programme, modelled on existing units in Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette, and Differdange, will serve eight municipalities: Mertert, Grevenmacher, Wormeldange, Stadtbredimus, Biwer, Manternach, Lenningen, and Flaxweiler.

Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden emphasised the unit’s dual focus: enhancing visible patrols and addressing community-specific needs. “This deployment ensures both a stronger police presence and closer engagement with residents,” he stated in response to a parliamentary question from MP Meris Šehović of the Green Party (Déi Gréng). According to Gloden, the Moselle Valley was selected because of its “busy” zones, “elevated crime risks” requiring patrols, and “recurring public order concerns” – criteria mirroring those used for prior pilot locations.

Despite the eastern region recording Luxembourg’s lowest 2024 offence rates (against persons, property, and drugs), Gloden stressed the project’s psychological impact: “In Luxembourg City and Esch, we’ve seen improved feelings of security alongside actual crime reduction.”

Staffing levels will be finalised after consultations with local officials.
