A recent two-week police operation targeting distracted driving has resulted in 579 motorists being fined for using mobile phones behind the wheel. The campaign coincides with new research from the Luxembourg Motoring Association (ACL) revealing that phone use while driving increases accident risks by 62%. “Driver distraction remains one of the leading causes of road accidents,” police stated, noting that smartphones divert attention visually, audibly, physically and cognitively.

The checks revealed multiple other infractions, including 260 fines for vehicle document irregularities. Officers encountered 52 drivers who failed to produce valid licenses, 96 vehicles without current roadworthiness certificates, and 28 uninsured vehicles. Additionally, 64 drivers lacked valid tax stickers, while one individual could not present a provisional licence and two failed to produce their training booklets.
