Two weeks ago, the French agency for medical safety released a warning of potential health risks, including the risk of cancer, relating to the so-called "mini-pill" contraceptives.

The mini-pill, a contraceptive based on Desogestrel, could increase the risk of developing tumours on the brain and spinal cord, according to a statement put out by France's National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety in recent weeks.

On Thursday, however, Luxembourg's Ministry of Health warned against coming off the pill without taking medical advice first. The majority of women who take the progesterone-only contraception never develop any tumours, the statement read, but the risk increases depending on the duration of taking the medication. Women over the age of 45 are thought to be more at risk.

In general, it is recommended to discuss contraception regularly with your treating doctor, depending on your age, needs, lifestyle, and medical indications.
