New MEPMartine Kemp focuses on European transport

RTL Today
Despite her limited seven-month tenure before the upcoming European elections, Luxembourg's new MEP, Martine Kemp, is determined to champion her positions, particularly in the realm of European transport.

Martine Kemp assumed her MEP role in Brussels, succeeding Christophe Hansen, who is currently involved in coalition negotiations for the next government.

She has taken over all the responsibilities of her party colleague, including matters related to international trade and tax issues within the Economic and Financial Affairs Council, alongside membership in the Environment, Public Health, and Food Safety Committee. While Kemp did not have a choice in these committee assignments, she stressed their significance, stating, “I don’t sit in Parliament on my own behalf, I represent the Grand Duchy.”

Transport issues at the forefront

Kemp’s primary area of interest lies in transport, given her background as a former traffic engineering student. She underscored the growing importance of autonomous driving and assistance systems in the market, stressing the need for the EU to take the lead in research while establishing the necessary legal framework.

Regarding soft mobility, Kemp advocates for the implementation of common standards across Europe to improve safety. The European Union has set an ambitious target to eliminate road fatalities by 2050, leading Kemp to call for a more consistent development of rail transport. Kemp described the existing European rail network as a “patchwork” and emphasised the necessity for dedicated high-speed railway lines.

While expressing her intention to represent the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) in the upcoming European elections in June 2024, Kemp acknowledged that no promises have been made as the party is in the midst of coalition negotiations. “I want to make the most of the time I have been given to bring Europe closer to the people and to persuade them through my work,” the 29-year-old MEP concluded.
