Ukraine’s bid to join NATO is among the discussions at the negotiating table during the gathering of heads of state and government in Vilnius.

During an interview with RTL in Lithuania, Prime Minister Xavier Bettel reiterated Luxembourg’s resolute opposition to Ukraine’s inclusion in NATO.

Bettel cited Article 5 of the NATO agreement to explain his position, stating that if Ukraine, as a country engaged in warfare, were to become a NATO member, all other member states would consequently be at war with Ukraine’s adversary.

Nevertheless, Bettel stressed that Luxembourg remains committed to assisting Ukraine to restore peace in the country. Once this is achieved, the country may then hope for a swift admission to NATO.

It is worth noting that the Prime Minister holds a similar viewpoint on a potential EU membership. According to Bettel, it is simply a matter of following the rules in both procedures.
