Luxembourg suffered a 0-2 home defeat against Bulgaria on Tuesday evening, leaving them bottom of their Nations League group after a disappointing first-half performance.

Luxembourg’s hopes of reviving their Nations League campaign faded on Tuesday as they lost 2-0 to Bulgaria at the Stade de Luxembourg.

The Red Lions went into the fourth matchday seeking to bounce back from consecutive defeats against Iceland and Estonia, having previously opened the group stage with a 2-1 win over Bulgaria.

The team, led by coach Jeff Strasser, hoped to return to winning ways and collect crucial points in Group 4 of League C, but a lacklustre first half ultimately proved decisive.

Despite a lively start to the match, Luxembourg’s defensive frailties were exposed early on. Both sides played at a high tempo in the opening minutes, with Bulgaria carving out the first opportunity through Stoyanov, whose shot went wide.

Luxembourg responded with chances for Thill and Natami in the seventh and eighth minutes, but neither could find the net. While Luxembourg’s attacking play was promising, they struggled to make their possession count.

As the first quarter of an hour passed, Bulgaria gained the upper hand and began to dominate. The breakthrough came in the 19th minute, when Balov finished off a well-worked move initiated by Tsenov, taking advantage of poor defensive positioning to put Bulgaria 1-0 ahead.

The Red Lions’ back line continued to struggle, allowing the visitors further opportunities as the half wore on.

Bulgaria doubled their lead in the 34th minute with a clinical volley from Iliev, who peeled away from his marker to meet a Rusev cross and finished emphatically past goalkeeper Moris.

Luxembourg appeared rattled and struggled to regain composure, managing just one dangerous header from Videira before the break, which Naumov dealt with comfortably.

Trailing by two goals at half-time, Luxembourg faced an uphill battle in a match where their defensive shortcomings had left them with a mountain to climb.

Improved second half, but no reward

After the break, Luxembourg found it difficult to impose themselves, with Bulgaria continuing to dictate play early in the half.

In the 54th minute, Iliev was picked out by Stoyanov’s cross but could not direct his header on target. Gradually, Luxembourg’s attacking players managed to create more chances.

One of the best opportunities came in the 60th minute when Thill found Natami in space, but the latter’s shot was saved by the Bulgarian goalkeeper. Thill almost converted the rebound, but his effort rolled just wide.

Luxembourg became more dangerous as the half went on, with Bohnert narrowly missing the target with a long-range effort in the 63rd minute. In the 68th minute, Natami and Kadamani both found themselves through on goal, but neither could beat Naumov.

In the closing stages, Luxembourg increased the pressure and had another chance in the 79th minute when Kadamani set up Natami, but the striker again failed to hit the target. Late attempts from distance, including efforts by Olesen and Natami, were either saved or missed the goal.

Despite a marked improvement after the interval, Luxembourg could not break Bulgaria’s resistance and finished the match empty-handed. The defeat leaves the Red Lions bottom of their Nations League group.
