On Wednesday, the Left Party (Déi Lénk) released a statement regarding new electricity rates, which will take effect on 1 January 2025 in Luxembourg. In the statement, the opposition party criticised the situation, describing it as “absurd” that “a family would pay more for electricity simply for running a dishwasher after dinner, while a Luxair advertisement illuminates the street in front of their home.” The Left Party characterised the proposed changes as “opaque.”
In its press release, the party highlighted that households in Luxembourg account for only about 15% of total electricity consumption. In contrast, the majority–approximately 80%–is used by industries, retail sectors, and office buildings. Consequently, the Left Party contends that the government should focus on reducing energy consumption in commercial settings, such as advocating for the shutdown of lighting in shop windows, rather than solely urging private individuals to use less electricity at home.
The Left Party clarified that it is not fundamentally opposed to a revised pricing structure for electricity, noting that it has long advocated for tiered pricing for water and energy.
