During 167 of these inspections, a total of 283 employees were found working without valid residence or work permits. As a result, ITM imposed 202 work stoppages and a sum of fines exceeding €1.2 million.

The figures were revealed in a joint response by Ministers Elisabeth Margue, Martine Deprez, and Léon Gloden to a parliamentary question asked by the ADR.

Across all sectors, ITM carried out more than 17,000 inspections throughout 2023. The unannounced checks specifically aim to target cases of illegal and irregular employment.

Six court rulings were issued last year based on the articles of the Immigration Act: three one-month prison sentences, two nne-month prison suspended sentences, three six-month fixed prison sentences, and two 24-month fixed prison sentences.
