Carlo Back has decided to step down from his mandate in the Chamber of Deputies before his 70th birthday. He will be succeeded by 25-year-old Jessie Thill, an employee of the Environment Agency and member of the municipal executive of Walferdange.

While the party has announced that it wants to discuss the distribution of its MPs among the different parliamentary committees from 2022 onwards internally first, it is already clear that Thill will be involved in the fields of sustainable development and the environment.

Thill has described the climate and biodiversity crises as “the most important challenges” of her generation. According to the environmental physicist, it is still possible to mitigate the effects of these crises, to limit climate change and “persevere our livelihoods and nature”. However, this requires “courageous political decisions at all levels”, Thill stressed, criticising that the warnings of scientists “have not been taken seriously”.

According to Thill, the Green Party is the only political party in which ecological thinking “permeates all areas, from the economy, to housing, transport, and agriculture”. However, the party’s clear stance in favour of feminism and gender equality are also important to her, the future MP stated.
