“The images from Gaza are no longer bearable”, MP Gusty Graas of the Democratic Party (DP) said in an interview with RTL on Wednesday morning. “We must ask ourselves whether the Israeli offensive in the enclave is still proportionate.”
Graas, who also serves as chair of the foreign affairs committee in the Chamber of Deputies, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza. Despite growing international pressure on Israel, he criticised the lack of real consequences or sanctions.
The EU is not presenting itself in a good light, he said, adding that several member states – including Germany – continue to block unified decisions. He noted that Israel finds itself surrounded by enemies but is also “very self-confident, very strong and has the USA behind it”.
As for Luxembourg’s position, Graas was clear: the country would not take unilateral steps. “Luxembourg won’t act alone”, he said, stressing that symbolic politics would have little impact.
He referred to the association agreement between the EU and Israel, which is meant to be based on shared values. “A recent report found that Israel no longer respects the fundamental values of the partnership”, he explained. “And yet the agreement has not been suspended.”
According to Graas, the EU is one of Israel’s most important trading partners – economic pressure could be an option. But, once again, the EU’s requirement for unanimous decisions stands in the way.
Looking ahead, Graas still sees a sliver of hope. “The EU foreign ministers will meet on 15 July”,he stressed, suggesting that the talks could offer an opportunity for meaningful action.
He also regretted that a planned UN conference was postponed due to the recent escalation between Israel and Iran. “It’s not the last chance, but it’s an important one”, he added.
Still, he remains realistic, even if Israel remains opposed to a two-state solution, said Graas.
