Cooking and baking is not only a fun activity for children, it is also beneficial for their development. Plus, what kid does not love hearing that their favourite meal is about to be served? Unfortunately, not every parent has the time or know-how to teach their children how to prepare a meal. Similarly, very few schools have regular cooking activities.
Fortunately, there are a number of cooking schools for children in Luxembourg. Joëlle Hinger, mother of two and trained teacher, launched such an institution in the midst of the pandemic. The name, ‘Mawaka’, is inspired by the Luxembourgish expression for “mum, what are we cooking today”, which Hinger repeatedly heard her children ask during lockdown.
Hinger took unpaid leave from work to launch the cooking school. Now, children aged three to 15 can learn about how to treat and prepare fresh produce at Mawaka.
The founders of ‘Minikäch’ (‘Mini chefs’) had a similar idea. Once a month, they invite children to Luxembourg’s hospitality school for a lesson on cooking or baking. Furthermore, they organise excursions to food producers and teach children how to properly serve a meal in a restaurant.
