The Grevenmacher swimming pool was actually scheduled to remain open until 30 September, but will now close three weeks earlier, on 9 September.

By keeping the site closed, local officials hope to conserve 17.138 cubic metres of gas, which equals the annual consumption of five households.

Shutting the pool ahead of time also helps safe electricity and water. Local officials estimate that they can conserve the average annual electricity consumption of ten households and the water consumption of 19 households.

According to a press release, further energy-saving measures put in place by the municipality of Grevenmacher include:

  • Lighting of public buildings and monuments will be switched off after 10pm
  • Switching off decorative ground spotlights
  • Continuous conversion to energy-saving LED street lighting
  • Lowering the brightness of night lighting in various streets by 60%
  • Optimization of heating systems in public buildings
