Déi Lénk parliamentary reviewGovernment is "radically neoliberal with authoritarian traits," say The Left

The Left Party has hit out at the Luxembourg government, reserving strong words for Prime Minister Luc Frieden.

Members of The Left (Déi Lénk) have criticised the current government in their latest parliamentary review, describing the coalition as carrying out “attacks” on working people with brutality and speed.

From social dialogue, collective agreements, retail hours or pension reform, the coalition was not social but instead “radically neoliberal”, with authoritarian traits and dictating from the top down, the party said. However, the government was also said to be totally incompetent, offering opposition parties an opportunity as it would be pushed into a corner by civil society.

Furthermore, members of the cabinet were completely isolated and questioned even within their own ranks, within the coalition and majority parties.

MP Marc Baum said the Prime Minister had been effectively left “standing in his underwear, not a pretty sight”. Looking to the future, the Left said it hopes its proposal to enshrine the right to abortion in the Grand Duchy’s constitution would be implemented, as it requires a two-thirds majority in parliament.

After poor election results, the Left Party announced structural reforms within itself this year. The party says the internal renewal process is underway, but as yet incomplete.
