Minister for Mobility Yuriko Backes acknowledged that despite progressing discussions, no specific sites or projects have been identified thus far. Notably, the government is contemplating the feasibility of solar panel projects on plots of land adjacent to motorways, as well as at Park and Ride facilities and transport hubs.

While the idea of solar panels above motorways has been considered, it faces challenges due to inherent complexities involved in construction and maintenance. As a result, the government leans towards alternative locations for solar installations.

Solar panels on public buildings

Instead of installing solar panels above motorways, Luxembourg has increasingly embraced solar energy initiatives on its public buildings. Currently, 65 buildings boast photovoltaic panels, while 21 feature (thermal) solar panels.

Although this accounts for 5% of the Public Buildings Administration’s property portfolio, it represents a substantial 15% of the available roof surface area, as they are predominantly found on larger structures such as schools, police stations, and military facilities.

At this stage, the government has launched 24 photovoltaic and solar projects, with an additional 87 sites earmarked for development between 2025 and 2028, according to information revealed in response to another parliamentary question from the Pirate Party.
