The former mayor of Schengen and Burmerange died on Thursday night.

Homan reached international prominence after appearing in an interview on CNN in 2016, during which he advocated fiercely for strict adherence to rules set out in the Schengen treaty.

It was under Homan’s mandate as mayor that the municipalities of Schengen, Remerschen, Burmerange and Wellenstein merged in 2011, with nine villages coming together to make one combined local authority under the name Schengen.

Homan was elected to the municipal council in Burmerange for the first time in 1994. He held the position of mayor for six years prior to the municipal merger, and served as mayor of the new municipality of Schengen until 2017, when he stepped down ahead of the local elections and was replaced by Michel Gloden. He also declined to stand in this year’s municipal elections.

In 2013, Homan also participated in the parliamentary elections, standing as a candidate for the CSV in Luxembourg’s eastern district.
He is survived by his wife and three daughters.
