Led by the national monument protection institute (INPA), the project focused on preserving the historical importance of the area, which plays a key role in the country’s mining and railway heritage.
A new staircase with integrated benches now welcomes visitors at the entrance. A playground inspired by the mining railway, upgraded infrastructure, and a refurbished platform are among the key improvements designed to enhance both safety and atmosphere.
The goal is to encourage more people to return to the site, enjoy its unique setting in nature, and share their experience with others.
“We’re far from finished”, said Patrick Sanavia, director of INPA. “We already have ideas for the next steps.”
The redesign also aims to accommodate more visitors in the future, with minimal signage to guide people naturally through the site. The exact navigation system is still being finalised.
The redevelopment of the Fond-de-Gras itself cost around €850,000, while investments related to the rail infrastructure totalled €2 million.
The renovated site will also serve as the setting for this Saturday’s Blues Express festival, with live music and food on offer throughout the day.
