A photo that has been circulating on social media has brought attention to an unfortunate incident involving an elderly woman who was inadvertently abandoned in an unfamiliar location after being dropped off by the Adapto service. After nearly four hours, she was finally located.

Adapto is a transport service designed to assist individuals with reduced mobility, disabilities, or permanent impairments who are unable to travel independently by private vehicle or public transportation.

Our colleagues from RTL.lu reached out to the woman’s daughter, who shared the photograph on Facebook, to shed light on the incident.

“My mother has been using the Adapto service for years and she has never had any problems,” says Michèle Reuland, who explains that they went together to a supermarket last Saturday before her mother was scheduled to be picked up by Adapto and taken back to her care home in Bettembourg.

However, her mother never arrived at the intended destination, prompting the care home to notify Reuland of her mother’s absence.

“My brother and the care home staff went out looking for her, and we even contacted the police. Adapto’s emergency helpline did not help us in our efforts,” the victim’s daughter says.

After several hours, CFL employees discovered the 73-year-old woman when they arrived for their night shift. The photo circulating on social networks was taken to document where the elderly woman was found.

Annick Trmata, the deputy director of the Public Transport Administration (ATP), expressed deep concern regarding the weekend incident, deeming it “regrettable.”

Trmata stressed that in this particular case, someone should have accompanied the passenger, and the driver should not have started the journey while the elderly woman was alone onboard.

According to preliminary information from the ATP, the passenger had also given the driver a different destination during the trip, deviating from the original order.

Officials are perplexed as to how the driver allowed the passenger to disembark in an unfamiliar and isolated location. The ATP has summoned both the driver and the bus company for an explanation.

All parties involved express their distress over the incident, urging service users to adhere to instructions while emphasising that drivers must follow the information within their system to prevent such occurrences.
