The number of pedestrians in Echternach has been recorded with the help of a special '3D Time of Flight Camera' technology.

This technology was developed in Luxembourg over the course of two years and was successfully completed ten years ago. Two such cameras are currently recording the number of passersby on key pedestrian thoroughfares in Echternach:  one on Rue de la Gare (known as Halergaass), the main shopping street, since May, and another on Rue du Pont. The one on Halergaass has counted 400,000 people in the first six months.

Echternach, the oldest city of Luxembourg, is a tourist spot, which is particularly busy with visitors in the summer months. It is especially important for municipal staff and the trade union to know exactly when to offer tourist attractions. The people counter allows the authorities to adapt their promotions to findings.

With the help of the 'People Counter', Echternach was able to record how many people attended the Steampunk convention and night flea market. The result was 7,000 visitors, with more than 150 per hour.

In the week between 19 and 25 August, an average of 3,100 people were counted in Echternach.

More such cameras are to be added in Luxembourg in the future. One camera is worth €1,000.
