Primary schools in Dudelange operated as usual on Wednesday morning despite the ongoing heatwave, with over half of preschool children in attendance – despite not being required to attend.

To cope with the high temperatures, some classes relocated to cooler classrooms. By 8.30am, thermometers in certain rooms at the Ribeschpont school had already surpassed 28°C.

Affected students and teachers moved to alternative spaces, including nearby drop-in centres (maisons relais). Others improvised with water games or spontaneous outings, such as ice cream trips.

The newly built Lenkeschléi school, which includes an integrated drop-in centre, had sufficient space to accommodate relocated classes – even welcoming students from other schools temporarily.

While preschool attendance was optional on Wednesday, teaching staff remained on-site to supervise arriving children. More than half still attended, demonstrating the demand for the service.

In the afternoon, all students are free to choose whether to attend school. Officials anticipate a significant turnout, as approximately 1,300 of the town’s 1,800+ students are registered at local drop-in centres.

School staff will be present to supervise afternoon activities, though no formal classes will be held. Instead, they will focus on heat-appropriate activities and ensure children stay hydrated.
