This was confirmed by Minister of Health Paulette Lenert in her reply to a parliamentary question by MP Claude Wiseler from the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV). The vaccines were ordered “a long time ago” in anticipation of a “serious Covid-19 wave” in autumn and winter, which some experts predicted could occur.
At the time, the plan was to have enough vaccines to protect the entire population of the Grand Duchy with an additional dose. But despite the fact that the second booster has been made available to anyone over the age of 12, only very few vaccines are currently being administered in Luxembourg. Last week, only 2,800 people were vaccinated, while the health authorities received a delivery of 57,780 doses.
According to Lenert, the government is doing “all it can” to send unused vaccines to other countries. However, the Grand Duchy has also been forced to discard coronavirus vaccines worth €1.4 million since last December. In July 2022 alone, over 33,000 doses of Moderna’s “Spikevax” vaccine had to be discarded because they had expired.
