In an interview with the newspaper “Quotidien,” Prime Minister Frieden expressed his view that the debate surrounding the begging ban has been “largely exaggerated.”

Despite deeming the issue as “not essential” for the government, Frieden underscored the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that everyone can lead a “decent” life with the ability to “sleep in a warm bed.”

Frieden emphasised the need for the rule of law to prevail, pointing out that the matter at hand involves a municipal regulation in Luxembourg City that must align with existing legislation. He clarified that the determination of compliance would be a matter for the courts to decide, affirming the democratic process wherein parliament holds the responsibility to clarify legal texts if necessary.

When questioned, Frieden revealed that he had instructed the relevant ministers to review the legal situation and provide clarification within the framework of a Criminal Code reform.

Quotidien spoke to Luc Frieden as part of a more extensive interview that is set to be published on Monday. The Prime Minister made the statements mentioned in this article in the context of that interview.
