Early on Tuesday morning, a business owner reported a suspected burglary at their premises in Hollerich to the police, after they were alerted by residents living near their business.
When the police patrol arrived on site, they were able to arrest the suspect outside the building. The individual had entered the premises through a window which they had forced open. The contents of the shop's till and other items, including a car key, were found on them during the search. The culprit was arrested and presented to an examining magistrate on Tuesday afternoon.
An hour later, another burglary was reported to the police, this time at the cultural centre in Rue de l'Abattoir. The burglar had broken a window to enter the building. In search of valuables, they broke down the door to a sports club and took several items.
As a witness had observed the scene closely, a connection was quickly made between the two burglaries and the suspect.
The owner of the key to a Nissan car has not yet been found. The police do not rule out that the key was stolen from somewhere else. The owner can contact the police by calling (+352) 244 40 1000.
On Sunday evening, thanks to a tip-off from a Mamer resident, the police caught a burglar in the act. A suspicious person had been reported on a private property in rue op Bierg loitering around a house, after there had already been an attempted burglary at a residence in rue Golda Meir during which the house's front door was damaged.
Also in rue Golda Meir, an individual entered through an unlocked door into the communal garage of a building, stealing a car key from another unlocked vehicle, before breaking into the cellar to take food and other items, which they loaded into the car, the key to which they had just taken. It was at this point that the culprit was surprised by a resident and fled towards the high street.
The police, who were immediately alerted, launched a search operation and succeeded in catching the suspect at around 9.30 pm near the sports hall in Rue de Bertrange. The stolen car key and the burglar's equipment were seized. After the intervention of the forensic teams at the two burglary sites, it was possible to determine that it was in fact the same individual who was responsible for both crimes.
The culprit was arrested before being presented to an examining magistrate. They were remanded in custody.
