New LSAP parliamentary group chairCSV and DP have 'a strange understanding of democracy'

RTL Today
The recent restructuring of the parliamentary group within the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) took centre stage on RTL Radio Wednesday morning, with criticism voiced by the acting Minister of Home Affairs and the newly appointed parliamentary group president of the LSAP, Taina Bofferding.

Despite party committees and MPs being yet to review the coalition agreement, they are expected to vote on it — an aspect that Bofferding deems “incomprehensible” and indicative of a “strange understanding of democracy.”

Speaking on RTL Radio, she expressed regret that the relationship between the opposition and the new government is off to a contentious start. Bofferding characterised the situation as the typical interplay between the majority and the opposition, stating that the LSAP would have preferred a more collaborative approach but would adapt to the prevailing circumstances.

“Political will” required to push through necessary reforms

Bofferding stated that she finds the recent speculations about who will take over which ministry “exhausting.” Some rumours suggest that housing could be merged with the environment and home affairs. While acknowledging that such a merger could make sense, Bofferding emphasised that success would hinge on the motivation of the person in charge and the effectiveness of the surrounding team. Bofferding underscored the need for substantial political will to drive the necessary reforms forward.

“We are banking on the DP”

Expressing concerns about crucial issues possibly being overlooked, Bofferding cited the reform of property tax and the implementation of the mobilisation tax as examples, underscoring the importance of these reforms.

In particular, Bofferding is banking on the Democratic Party (DP) to champion these causes. She expressed the hope that the new Minister of Home Affairs would view these reforms objectively, acknowledging their importance beyond party lines.

“Personal choices” by Paulette Lenert and Jean Asselborn

Taina Bofferding was confirmed as the new LSAP Parliamentary Group President on Tuesday. According to Bofferding, lead candidate Paulette Lenert willingly stepped aside from the position to foster a more inclusive and collaborative team dynamic. Bofferding highlighted the intention to have multiple individuals in prominent roles, each bringing distinct strengths to the forefront. Notably, there were no discussions about adopting a dual leadership model, akin to the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV).

Bofferding also expressed understanding for Jean Asselborn, who announced on Tuesday that he would not be taking a seat in the Chamber of Deputies. She acknowledged that this decision might leave a bitter aftertaste for some, considering Asselborn’s significant vote count, before adding, “but after all, we are talking about Jean Asselborn here.” She emphasised Asselborn’s extensive political career, spanning almost two decades as a minister and holding positions as an MP and mayor. Bofferding recognised that the decision was not an easy one for her party colleague and commended Asselborn for his honesty in acknowledging the need for a respite and stepping back from active political roles.
