At around 10am on 22 September 2023, a lorry crashed on the A1 motorway, as the trailer detached and brought down a gantry on the opposite lane. The falling debris struck a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction and killed the driver, a Dutch father, on the spot, while seriously injuring his wife who was in the passenger seat.

An investigation was opened immediately following the incident. On Friday 9 January, the case went to court.

The prosecution is calling for the lorry driver to serve a prison sentence and to be issued an appropriate fine. According to experts, the truck lifted on the motorway as the driver forgot to switch off the hydraulics system. The detachment of the trailer is attributed to a defect in the lorry itself, as this is usually done by the driver pulling a lever next to the driver’s seat.
