The Chamber of Deputies’ Presidents’ Panel then asked Claude Wiseler to seek a meeting with Weidig, which took place on Monday and was also attended by Vice-president Mars di Bartolomeo and ADR party leader Fred Keup. But what exactly was said and what conclusions were drawn remain unknown.

According to members of the panel, Wiseler is said to not have gone into major detail but rather reminded Weidig that Facebook posts such as his are undignified for an MP. Weidig, on the other hand, is said to have insisted that he was misunderstood.

It is to be noted that such a discussion is not actually foreseen in Luxembourgish parliamentary regulations, and considering Weidig’s statements did not take place at the conference, responsibility does not actually fall on Wiseler. In short, Weidig was not even obliged to go to the meeting.
Following the Weidig case, general discussions of a potential deontology code for MPs were held - a discussion that is not so easy, says Wiseler.

“Considering deontology codes and parliamentary immunity affect the freedom of expression and private lives of our MPs, this would be an extremely sensitive and complicated issue. Nonetheless, we have decided to ask other European parliaments how they would approach such a controversy and whether they might have documents or codes in place for such incidents.”

The Chamber is part of a network of European parliaments that exchange information via an information system. However, it could take a few months for everyone to respond.
