Benoît Elvinger was officially introduced as the new Chief Executive Officer of Spuerkeess at a press conference on Tuesday. Elvinger joined the Luxembourg state-owned bank on 1 August, allowing for a two-month transition period before he formally takes over as CEO on 1 October.
Elvinger will succeed Françoise Thoma, who announced her resignation in November 2023 after leading Spuerkeess since 2016. Camille Fohl, Chair of the Board of Directors, emphasised that Thoma's departure forms part of a broader generational change in the bank's leadership, and is not related to the so-called Caritas affair. Thoma will remain involved with Spuerkeess as a strategic advisor to the board.
Elvinger underlined that his role is not to change the bank's direction, but to accelerate progress towards its existing goals. The board introduced an ambitious strategic programme last November, which Elvinger said he fully supports.
He stressed that, with ongoing innovations, Spuerkeess intends to ensure clients do not have to choose between the speed of digital services and the personal touch of an advisor. He also declined to commit to a specific number of branches, noting that the focus is on service quality rather than quantity.
"What I can say is that we will continue to invest in our branches. A good example is the new branch in Kirchberg. We will keep expanding to offer as many services as possible and provide a complete range for our clients. That, to me, is more important than just quoting a number", Elvinger explained.
