Am Kader vun eiser Serie iwwer d‘Deputéiert, déi fir d‘éischt an der Chamber sinn, stelle mir Iech d’Alexandra Schoos vir.

On 8 October, Schoos won back a seat in Luxembourg’s eastern district which the Alternative Democratic Reform Party (adr) had not held since 2009. Schoos’ successful election campaign thereby made her the party’s first female representative in the Chamber of Deputies.

Born in Berdorf, the daughter of former adr president Jean Schoos has particularly strong ties to eastern Luxembourg and the Müllerthal, which are reflected in her politics.

Several times throughout her interview with RTL, Schoos highlighted how her love for the region plays a central role in her approach to political activities. As a veterinarian, she also values animals and nature, and said the country’s major challenges, such as housing, should not come at the expense of the environment. Schoos describes this as a challenge for the future in general, not just for the new legislative period.

Despite Schoos’ father’s tenure as party president, she said her entry into politics is not wholly a case of following in her father’s footsteps. In fact, she admitted that there was little talk of politics at home during her childhood. Instead, she chose to stand for election in order to participate and actively campaign in order to implement her ideas, saying she does not believe in simply complaining and doing nothing to change matters.

When choosing her political affiliation, the new MP said the adr was always the clear favourite. The party reflects her own values in terms of supporting her country and the Luxembourgish language, but also social and conservative aspects of the party’s policies. The party’s set-up was also a factor in her selection.

In order to embark on her political career, Schoos had to give up her job at a veterinary laboratory in Dudelange - a difficult decision, she said. However, she is looking forward to her new and shorter commute, and is excited by the prospect of being able to travel to work in the capital by bus - something she was unable to do in her previous role due to the lack of bus links between Berdorf and Dudelange.

In 2022, Schoos was named vice-president of the adr. When questioned about her ambitions, she said she is very happy with her current position, but is also fostering an interest in local politics. However, municipal politics will be an issue for the future, as for now, Schoos wants to concentrate on her new role in the Chamber of Deputies. “I didn’t feel as though I had to prove myself within the party,” she said. “I just had to prove something to myself.”
